Landscape Painting, Oil on Canvas, a Two-Day Art Workshop for Beginning and Intermediate Students with Ari Ferro 

A two-day workshop on oil painting will be held in the studio at 302 W Corbin St., Hillsborough. The objective is to provide basic instruction in landscape painting for beginning and intermediate students. The cost of the workshop is $260 to be paid to the Gallery (registration link: ). The workshop will be held on Saturday and Sunday (August 3rd and 4th, 2024) from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm (with a lunch break) and will be limited to 4-5 students. The overall objective of the workshop is for each student to create at least one landscape painting based on a favorite photo. 

Course outline 

Each student will bring in several favorite landscape photos they’d like to paint. Photos on a laptop would be best so they can be cropped. Cropping will be carried out with the assistance of a view finder, which is used to match the dimensions of photo and that of the canvas.

· Day 1.  The creation of a preliminary painting.

o Selection. Each student will work with the instructor to decide which of the several photos would be best for a painting. The photos will be assessed in terms of: 

§ Elements of composition

§ Center of interest

§ Diagonal elements used to lead the eye into the composition.

§ Relative values in the photo and discussion of “angles and consequent values”

o Charcoal Sketches. The canvases will be marked off into quarters and sketches will be made of the chosen landscape scene.  Sketching is very important because the composition can be easily refined at this stage. Linear perspective will be discussed.

o Sketches will be transformed into “posters”. A poster is a preliminary painting made before focusing on modeling and areal perspective (worked on in Day 2). 

§ Small piles of pure colors (paints from the tubes) will be placed along the edge of the student pallets.

§ Warm and cool colors as well as saturation and the greying down of colors, will be discussed in reference to the color wheel.

§ Mixing colors will be demonstrated by the instructor (e.g. mixing blue and yellow paints to make green, greying down the mixture using red, and adjusting the value of the mixture). 

§ The students will analyze the main color zones in their sketch, mix the pure colors on their pallet, and create their poster thereby preserving their sketch. Angles and consequent values will be stressed.

§ The importance of covering the canvas at the poster stage (i.e., leaving no bare canvas showing) will be discussed.

· Day 2.  Finishing the painting. (Intermediate level painters may finish their first painting during Day 1 and begin a second painting on Day 2). The various elements of the poster will be evaluated relative those in the photo. The elements of areal perspective and modeling will be discussed. These elements are important in giving the painting a three-dimensional quality.

o Values in the poster will be checked against the photo using a red filter. Angles and consequent values will again be discussed.

o The saturation of the colors in the poster will be assessed. One of the main tasks in this stage of painting is adjusting the saturation of colors.

o Areal perspective of the painting will be assessed: objects in the distance are bluer and lighter; warmer colors especially yellow are in the foreground. 

o The direction of the sun depicted in the painting will be assessed relative to that in the photo. The importance of shadows and contrast as compositional elements will be discussed. 

o Modeling of objects depicted in the painting will be discussed in terms of the creation of a three-dimensional quality.  Specifically, objects in the painting will be depicted with an illuminated side and highlights, a local color, and a shadowed side. 

Recommended Supplies:

It is recommended students purchase supplies for this workshop -- this will allow students to continue developing their oil painting supplies at the end of the workshop. The supplies are basic tools for beginning oil painters.

· Long-handle bristle brushes (#s 2, 4, 6 and 8; Ultrecht are good). 

· Two pallet knives (T5, T6; approx. ¾ inch x 2 inch with tip)

- One or more 11x14" canvas boards

Cancellation, Refund Policies

Cancellations of registration up to one week before the beginning of the workshop will be fully refunded, minus a 5% processing fee.

Cancellations less than one week prior to the beginning of the workshop will not be refunded.

If the Gallery cancels the workshop, registrations will be fully refunded.
