There are three sections on this page:
Expectations of artists displaying work in the Gallery:
· Work will be delivered and picked up promptly at agreed on times. The Gallery has very limited storage space. Time is needed in between when work is delivered and a new show is opened.
· Work comes in ready to hang. We have a wall hanging system. Work should be equipped with wires on the back for hanging. We discourage sawtooth hangers though we do recognize that they are appropriate for some small pieces.
· Work is sellable. If the pictures are framed and/or matted, the frames and/or mats (and glass if present) are clean and undamaged and appropriate for the piece of art. If you have work under glass, please make sure dust or debris are not trapped under the glass. Typically, no matter how good the piece of work is, it will not sell if the potential purchaser cannot tell if the work is clean and undamaged.
· Artists participating in a themed show plan to be present at Last Friday Art Walk reception. There are exceptions to this, but participating artists unable to be present at the reception should let us know ahead of time so we promote properly.
- Artists in regular rotation at the gallery plan to be present at 4 or more Last Friday Art Walks.
· If an artist is present on Facebook and/or Instagram, that they follow our page, and like and share posts as appropriate.
· Artists adhere to contract terms in regard to not selling similar or the same work within a month of showing at the Gallery for less than the Gallery price.
· Artists not show duplicate or highly similar work at other Hillsborough locations while showing at the Gallery. Our goal in avoiding duplicative work is to have unique offerings, and to help ensure that the opportunity to display work is afforded to the greatest number of artists. As with all things, there are exceptions: these should be discussed and agreed to with the Gallery.
We carry work as part of several different formats:
· Primary shows, that change monthly with each Last Friday Art Walk (we typically ask for work to come in the Sunday evening, Monday and Tuesday morning before the show opens on Wednesday morning, with the opening reception on the evening of the Hillsborough Last Friday Art Walk, from 6-9 pm).
These shows, typically put up in the east front gallery room (gold gallery) are almost always themed shows involving multiple local artists. We periodically announce upcoming themes by sending an email to any artist who asks to be on our email list. Artists wishing to participate in a particular show sends an image, or images, along with pertinent information, by the announced submission deadline, usually the 15th of the preceding month (approx. 6 weeks before opening). We then select from the submissions to populate the primary show.
· Mini shows. We have a 2nd gallery room on the 1st floor which is used both for smaller featured shows, either centering on a specific theme with a limited number of artists, or showcasing a specific artist’s work. The schedule for these is more flexible than for the primary shows (ie, sometimes less than or more than a full month, starting on variable dates). Some of the mini shows are in support of the community, such as shows of Cedar Ridge High School International Baccalaureate Art senior student work, and an annual show of work from the men at Orange Correctional Center.
· Other resident work. This work is not specific to a show, and rotates in and out as agreed to by the artist and Gallery. This work is usually displayed in one of the other 3 first floor rooms, or in the 2nd floor gallery. Typically, we ask that unsold resident work be swapped out every 6 or so months.
We work on a straight commission basis. The gallery retains 40% of the sales price of sold work. There is no fee for artists to show work in the gallery, no fee for artists to submit work for consideration, or any “wall rental” fee. No one makes any money from unsold work; both the Gallery and the artist make money when work sells. The Gallery cannot promise that work will sell.
Please contact the Gallery if you are interested in participating in upcoming themed shows for steps in how to submit work, and to verify themes. Changes may be made to themes. Not all work that is submitted is accepted; these are curated shows.
